As part of National Reconciliation Week, Allinto hosted a Paint ‘n’ Yarn in Toowoomba, on the traditional lands of the Jarowair people, led by Shayla Collins-Wharton, a proud Kooma Mardigan woman from South West Queensland.
Shayla is an above-knee amputee, Artist, and Project Coordinator of Cultural Connections at Ngaya Inda Ngali Care Services and facilitated the session with her sister, Jancy.
With a strong passion for First Nations art, she delivers cultural programs for NDIS participants bringing people together through story and creativity.
Allinto Regional Lead, Virginia Bell coordinated the session to provide a memorable event to mark National Reconciliation Week.
“Providing opportunities to connect with culture is a valuable part of reconciliation,” said Virginia. “Shayla brought so much passion and history to the space.”
“She gave attendees a bag with paints and brushes, explained the meaning behind each symbol, and then guided the group as we created our own stories on canvas,” she said.

Throughout the session, Shayla shared her personal journey and the cultural significance behind each of the elements in the artwork.
Everyone was encouraged to paint using symbols that resonated with their own experiences and stories, creating a rich tapestry of personal and cultural expression.
“The staff and clients loved it. It was special to witness the engagement throughout the painting session and connection to Shayla’s story,” said Virginia.
By creating a safe and creative space, Shayla helped everyone learn more about First Nations culture while encouraging self-expression.

This event was a beautiful reflection of National Reconciliation Week’s theme Now More Than Ever—a reminder of the power of culture, connection, and community.
